Robyn Kinsela is a very accomplished artist working predominantly with painting. In her work she investigates the relationship between the self and an emotional connection to the landscape. Deliberate simplified mark making is often used to express a celebration of Australia’s iconic landscape. While an artist can experience the sounds, textures, smells, patterns and spaces that make up the landscape, the artistic response can be very individual and, at times, somewhat intangible. Each of her paintings takes on a life of its own, and satisfaction is achieved by creating a painting which expresses interest, beauty and artistic inquiry.

Robyn Kinsela is concerned with seeking an honesty of expression in the work – perhaps defined by her own experiences and background. In this exhibition, she is painting the landscape West of Wilcannia as she feels it, not as others would necessarily see it. The approach is therefore abstract and challenges normal visual observations of that landscape. In doing so, the viewer may be disarmed, by transcending the obvious features of this amazing landscape and creating a deeper beauty - a beauty reliant upon experience and memory that comes from within. Sometimes this beauty can be exquisite sometimes unforgiving, harsh and demanding and, for an artist, always challenging. I hope you enjoy this West of Wilcannia exhibition - Robyn Kinsela’s artistic response to what is an amazing Australian landscape.

The 2012 Summer Masterclass with Ruth Hadlow, Content & Form, will explore relationships between books, ideas and practice. Umberto Eco proposes that we are formed and informed by the ‘background books’ which have been part of our upbringing and education, which have shaped our ways of comprehending and perceiving the world. In response to this, the masterclass will focus on conventions
and forms derived from literature and the world of books to re/consider and investigate ideas pertinent to individual practice. Content & Form will be structured as a series of one-day projects, aimed at exploring a wide array of possibilities and generating beginnings for a set of new projects. Working in the creative space
between literature, art and artists books, this summer’s masterclass will take a hands-on approach and focus on the act of making as an active strategy for instigating ideas, as a form of logic with its own particular nature.

[We] travel and explore the world, carrying with us some ‘background books’. These need not accompany us physically; the point is that we travel with preconceived notions of the world, derived from our cultural
tradition. In a very curious sense we travel knowing in advance what we are on the verge of discovering,
because past reading has told us what we are supposed to discover. In other words, the influence of these
background books is such that, irrespective of what travellers discover and see, they will interpret and
explain everything in terms of these books.

The aim of the Masterclass is to encourage critical engagement with ideas, objects, texts and the surrounding world for the purpose of developing individual practices. The Masterclass provides a supportive environment of fellow artists, project structures to enable focused exploration and investigation, discussions, readings and a wealth of reference material. There is a research element which must be carried out as preparation in advance of the Masterclass, which will provide subject material and references for the project work and discussions. As with previous Masterclasses by Ruth Hadlow, the program aims to stimulate and challenge, to enable debate and innovation, to extend notions of practice, and above all to provide a space for the development of ideas.

The 5-day residential format enables an intensive program of projects, readings and discussions, with individual guidance from this innovative and inspiring teacher. The 2012 Masterclass will once again be held at a private residence in Yarralumla, Canberra, close to the National Gallery of Australia for excursions and Lake Burley Griffin for early morning walks. Following on from last year, the Masterclass will accept a small number of non-residential participants who may attend on a daily basis. Participant numbers are limited to enable maximum benefit through individual attention.

Residential fee: $625 full tuition, accommodation and meals (Sunday dinner to Saturday breakfast)
Non-residential fee: $450 full tuition, morning & afternoon tea, lunch & dinner (Sunday dinner to Friday dinner)

NB. Materials are not included but can be sourced by participants at low cost.

The ANU Textiles Workshop is offering its fifth Weavers’ Summer School. This is an opportunity for intermediate and advanced weavers to use the workshop looms for a personal project. This can be for a finished piece or to engage in weave experimentation. Applicants will need to have completed basic introduction to 4 shaft weave structures.

The Weavers’ Summer School offers:

3 counter-march 8-10 shaft treadle looms, all with double back beam
5 computer dobby looms (16-24 shaft), all with double back beam
Weaving equipment ie warping mill, shuttles, bobbin winder, threaders, temples etc
Assistance with calculations and set up of projects
Instruction and assistance with use of computer design program and looms
Informal show-and-tell and exchange by participants and tutor

Participants are required to contact the tutor to organise materials before the summer school starts. Previous projects have included complex weave scarves, large throws, table runner sets, decorative wall pieces, lengths of material, floor rugs.

Craft Australia Defunded

On Thursday, 12 October, Craft Australia was officially notified that it has been ‘defunded’: it will receive no more triennial funding from the Australia Council for the Arts beyond the end of 2011.

While Craft Australia and the broad constituencies it represents and supports would dispute this decision, the result effectively means the organisation has no funds to operate beyond 31 December 2011. This decision comes at a point when the sector is poised to make some significant developments in relation to craft, design, innovation and the creative industries, and in which Craft Australia has played and would have continued to play a significant role.

Volunteers provide a daily reassurance telephone call each morning to individuals who are frail, aged, socially or geographically isolated or with a chronic medical condition.

Volunteers contribute to the independence of people living at home who are at risk of sudden illness or accident by reliably making a daily phone call to check on the clients health and welfare, as well as following prescribed procedure if the client does not answer the phone or there are concerns for their welfare.

Planning for the fourth annual Woden Valley Community Festival to be held on Saturday 5 November at Eddison Park is well underway and we would love to have you involved!

Living Green Festival is on this Sunday 16th

Canberra is having its first Living Green Festival in October! The Festival will focus on the relationship between climate change, the environment, and animals and aims to raise awareness about how the choices we make in our everyday lives can affect not only the environment, but humans and other animals as well. The theme of the Festival is 'a kinder shade of green' and it will showcase easy ways we humans can reduce our carbon footprint and be more considerate of the other animals we share this planet with. It will feature sustainable, fair trade and cruelty-free food, products and services; market stalls; talks on environmental, animal protection and health issues; free yoga and gardening workshops; live music and dance performances; children's entertainment and more! All of which will create a fun-filled festival and market atmosphere coinciding with the last day of Floriade in the Capital.

The Living Green Festival will be held in the recently refurbished Albert Hall on Sunday 16 October 2011 between 10am and 4pm. The Hall is easy to get to by public transport, bike, and on foot, and is only a short walk from Floriade. The Festival is assisted by the ACT Government Climate Change Grants. Volunteers wanted for aquaCulture nights at Dickson Pool

This January, aquaCulture Nights at Dickson Pool raised thousands of dollars for local community groups, residents groups, refugees and the Queensland Flood Appeal. Over the last five years we've raised $20,000 for all sorts of causes.

It attracted over 8,000 residents of all ages from all across the ACT, and as far away as the South Coast.

It created a special place to go to relax in the summer and share fun and music and dancing by the water as the sun went down.

Two mothers made it happen and did all the work, for nothing. Now we need your help to do it again. Please contact Jane Goffman at Active Planning if you can offer your time to this valuable community-building effort in the inner North.

A competition to design unique, high quality objects, to be produced and sold as memorabilia for the city's centenary in 2013. 4 winners will each receive $10,000 for the production costs of the memorabilia product.

The Canberra region has a vibrant and innovative community of artists and designers with a rich history of contribution to the territory and the nation. The project calls on ACT region to create a product of memorabilia that commemorates the Centenary of Canberra and celebrates 100 years of Canberra as Australia's national capital.

Braidwood Quilt Event - $1,000 acquisitive art quilt prize

$1,000 acquisitive art quilt prize that's on offer at this year's Braidwood Quilt Event.

Although Braidwood is in rural SE NSW, it is open to quilt entries from anywhere around the country. You'd just have to post your quilts there and pay for return postage if you can't deliver your items in person.

In previous years, a local gallery in Braidwood has sponsored an acquisitive award for one category at the quilt event, but it has always been a fairly specialised category

But from this year, a local Braidwood business (Cortona Resources), has stepped in to offer an acquisitive award of $1,000 for an art quilt at the Braidwood Quilt Event. This year the theme is one that Braidwood Quilt Event has had as a standard category for some time: "We are Australian".

As well as this acquisitive award, there is the usual $200 prize for viewers' choice at the indoor exhibition (the main competition, which is open from the official opening on the Friday night, to the end of the day on the Sunday), plus an additional $200 prize for the viewers' choice winner of the outdoor exhibition (the Airing of the Quilts which is held on the Saturday only). There are some other cash prizes on offer as well, plus the usual other kinds of prizes for various categories.

The deadline for receipt of entry forms is Monday October 24, 2011, and the quilts must be received by Monday November 14, 2011. The actual Braidwood Quilt Event runs from the evening of Friday November 25 (6 pm for the official opening, till about 7:30 pm), to Sunday November 27. Come along to the Contemporary Craft Retreatattend for one or more days which is being held near Canberra from 14-16th October 2011. It is not very often that we get an opportunity to participate in a creative event like the Contemporary Craft Retreat in our own region.

There are 20 fabulous workshops being offered by 9 of the top Contemporary Craft Instructors/Artists from around Australia. This is a non profit making event and any profit made will be put towards running another event next year. Costs are very reasonable and include meals, morning and afternoon tea and tuition. Mary Schoeser, specialist author in textiles, is working on an exciting project commissioned by Thames & Hudson, London. Entitled The Art of Textiles, this is to be a major work comprising over 1,000 images and celebrating the breadth and depth of the field today.

Mary is keen to source stunning images of the work of creative individuals. Of equal interest are pieces that have been collected as outstanding inspirational examples, including ethnographic and historical materials, since one aspect of the text deals with the impact of the ‘eye of the beholder’. In particular, detailed images are sought in order to illustrate the complexity and extraordinary variety of manipulations, surface treatments, materials, and structures that textiles present. In addition, Mary is seeking personal statements elucidating why or how each piece is of personal significance.

Submissions for consideration may be in digital or slide/transparency format. Digital images must be supplied as TIFF files, RGB calibrated, on discs. Please supply a reference print for colour balance as well as the following details: name, image title, date, media and technique, photo credit, and permission to publish. If the item is ethnographic or historical please indicate its origins. Selected images will not attract a reproduction fee, but will be acknowledged. There will be a resource list in the end-matter; please indicate whether or not you would like a contact email address/website to be included under the contributors list and specify the details.

Congratulations to those of you who came along to the Christmas in July markets. The stalls all looked wonderful, the music was divine and it was a lovely atmosphere. Despite the wintry weather, there was a very steady stream of people through, especially in the first two or three hours.

Spring is the time of year when layers of clothing required start to dwindle, biking becomes a rekindled passion and vegetable gardens are revived...

The Spring Swap & Sale welcomes the change of season by providing a space to reconnect with all these warmer weather month activities forgotten through a giant SWAP!

Items for swapping only are clothes*, books, dvds and cds, while bike parts and seedlings may be swapped or bought.

*To participate in the Clothes Swap you will need to register your items by 1pm on the day as the Clothes Swap will commence at 1.30pm.

All other items may be swapped/bought between 12pm - 3pm.

Swapping Guidelines:

Book, CD & DVD SWAPPING GUIDELINES:

WHAT TO SWAP
1. Items may only be swapped like for like (i.e. book for book etc.)
2. A maximum of 10 items per category, per person may be swapped (i.e. 10 books, 10 CDs etc.)
3. Items for swapping must be in good working order/condition; something that you would be happy to swap for yourself
4. Items considered to be in too poor condition for swapping may be rejected from the swap

HOW THE SWAP WILL WORK
1. Swapping of Books, CDs and DVDs will take place between 12pm - 3pm
2. Items must be registered, quality checked and swapped for corresponding tokens
3. Participants will then have access to peruse through items available for swapping
4. Once you have found the items that you would like to swap your tokens for, you take them to the check-out desk to make the exchange
5. Enjoy your new items!

CLOTHES SWAPPING GUIDELINES:

WHO CAN SWAP
Guys, girls and children of all shapes, sizes and styles. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

WHAT TO SWAP
All well-kept wearable pieces and accessories that are ready for a new life are welcome. From designer wear to cool t-shirts to good quality basic garments from local high street stores. Keep in mind that quality is key to making the Clothes Swap a success for everyone.

You can swap up to 10 items of clothing, including accessories (hats, scarves, belts) and shoes in good condition
Items likely to be valued by others
Mens, womens and childrens clothing
Garments clean, folded or pressed

WHAT NOT TO SWAP

Faulty items i.e. holes, missing buttons, frayed, pilled, streched, shrunken, stained etc.
Items that are straying too far from perfect or are incomplete
Items which are smelly
We can’t exchange undergarments, swimwear, lycra, tracksuits or anything polar-fleece.

HOW THE SWAP WILL WORK

Those participating in the Clothes Swap will need to register by 1pm. Registration involves having your items quality checked and exchanged for tokens which you will then use to swap for newfound items.
Once you have registered you will have half an hour to browse around the rest of the site while clothing items are hung up and displayed.
At 1.30pm the Clothes Swap will begin and participants will be allowed to enter.
Once you have found the items that you would like to swap your tokens for, you take them to the check-out desk to make the exchange.

My name is Renee and I’m a teacher at Red Hill School.

Our school is an IB school and part of this program involves our Year 6 classes taking part in Exhibition.

Students undertake an extensive investigation into a real-life issue that combines global significance with local relevance. The organising theme for the exhibition is How We Express Ourselves. Small groups of Year 6 students will collaboratively inquire into an aspect of this very broad topic- The ARTS For example, their inquiry may be into human impact on society, homelessness, drugs, families in need, power of money etc.

We are interested in having an Artist come visit us and discuss issues that are represented via the arts and how artist are compelled to reflect on these through a range of mediums. Perhaps even demonstrate and create with the students a piece of art.

The ACT Government is seeking interested volunteers to assist with the delivery of the 2011 Canberra Nara Candle Festival taking place on Saturday 22 October.

The Canberra Nara Candle Festival is an annual celebration of the Canberra Nara Sister City relationship. The Festival embraces the values of friendship and goodwill between our two countries through a diverse program of performance, cultural activities, displays and cuisine.

The centrepiece of the Festival is a stunning display of 2,000 candles in our very own Japanese Garden. The Canberra Nara Candle Festival is being coordinated by the ACT Government, with the support of the Embassy of Japan and many community groups.

How can I get involved?

This is primarily a community festival, which relies on substantial voluntary support from both groups and individuals. We are inviting members of the general public to participate in the events for which there are a variety of tasks and roles.

You must be over the age of eighteen (18) to be eligible to volunteer.

Volunteers over the age of 18 will be insured by the ACT Government.

We’d appreciate you helping us spread the word about JUMP and the info session to anyone you think may be interested.

JUMP is the Australia Council's national mentoring program for young and emerging artists (18-30yrs) that identifies and promotes excellence in artistic practice. Supported artforms include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts, Community Arts, Dance, Interdisciplinary Arts, Literature, Music, Theater, or Visual Arts. Already the largest artist mentoring program nationally, the 2012 program features the highest number of mentorship places on offer yet in the program. Through the JUMP program artists can further their careers through a ten month one on one relationship with a leading arts professional of their choice, and join a diverse national network of around 150 program participants and alumni making their mark on the industry.

The plant fibre materials that Paperworks' artisans employ are delicate in appearance, a reflection of the inherent fragile essence of each human being. The nuances of colour and texture exhibited by the fibrous pieces are reminiscent of seasonal change and echo the fleetingness of temporal life.

Ceramicists Crick and Lewis explore our perception of the container, the vessel, the sculptured object, with Ikebana as their common source of inspiration. Creative Alchemy

Following on the success of Belco Bizarre, a community exhibition by members of the Belconnen community to celebrate the Centre’s first anniversary, Creative Alchemy is an opportunity for artists to contribute works that visualise, interpret, spark debate and have fun with the creative forces that bubble up in us, our society and the physical world around us. Artists from the Belconnen region are especially encouraged to apply.

To help ignite your creative ‘sparks”, here are a few manifestations / expressions of alchemy:

an ancient practice focused on the attempt to change base metals into gold

the ancient search for a universal panacea, and for the philosopher's stone

a microprocessor

a fictional British mutant in the Marvel Comics universe

a computer puzzle game

a novel

an ongoing Japanese manga series

So you can see, many interesting interpretations of alchemy already exist!

Creative Alchemy aims to be an exhibition of works that are a “cut above” the ordinary, and which reflect thoughtful (and playful, intriguing, unusual, etc.) consideration of the exhibition’s brief. We encourage new and emerging artists, students, recreational artists, as well as professional practitioners, with the emphasis on the creation of visually and tactile stimulating and engaging works.

Creative Alchemy II, in the Foyer Space: Textile artist Julie Ryder combines the arts practice of printmaking with the impact of chemical reaction and transformation, and will be exhibiting her fascinating prints in the Foyer Gallery Space in a companion exhibition.

Julie, a Canberra-based textile artist who uses science as a base for her research and arts-practice, has developed a hybrid practice between art and science. Ryder uses bacteria, moulds, the chemical reaction that occurs between vegetable matter, natural fibres and various minerals used for mordants, and multiple scientific technologies) to create her intricate screen-printed designs. Ryder’s early science training and study working in a veterinary research lab, have translated into her science-based arts practice. She is able to illustrate how that scientific research and investigation led her to an ongoing fascination with the micro and the macro in nature.

There will be a selection process for the exhibition and those selected to exhibit their works in Creative Alchemy will be notified the week of 15 August by phone or email whichever is preferred.

An exciting public program of talks, workshops and possible demonstrations will accompany the exhibitions.

Thick and Thin: From Rags to Riches!

Tutor: Monique van Nieuwland

Enjoy adventures in weaving!

This short course will use thick and thin as the main theme. We will explore several weave structures to create a variety of fabric outcomes. We will use strips of fabric as weft, combined with other wefts to best advantage. Resulting fabrics will suit different applications, ranging from fine wearables, cushion covers, decorative pieces, to rugs. You will come away with a great set of samples and guidance to further develop into a project of your own at home.

People will share looms with different set ups. The tutor will provide fabrics to make into weft. Participants are also encouraged to source their own ‘rags’ and turn them into riches!

Participants have the use of a table loom and can also bring their own table loom if they wish. Recommended for beginner and intermediate level

Fifth Weavers’ Summer School

Summer 2012, January 21-25 and 27-28

Applicants will need to have a basic knowledge of 4 shaft weave structures.

The Weavers’ Summer School offers:

3 counter-march 8-10 shaft treadle looms, all with double back beam
5 computer dobby looms (16-24 shaft), all with double back beam
Weaving equipment ie warping mill, shuttles, bobbin winder, threaders, temples etc
Assistance with calculations and set up of projects
Instruction and assistance with use of computer design program and looms
Informal show-and-tell and exchange by participants and tutor

Participants are asked to contact the tutor to organise materials before the summer school starts. Previous projects have included complex weave scarves, large throws, table runner sets, decorative wall pieces, lengths of material, floor rugs.

A dedicated shop for fibre and textile nuts is opening in Boorowa next Saturday, July 9 at 26 Marsden Street (the main street), next to the saddlers and just up the road from the Superb Café.

Boorowa is a scenic hour to hour and a half drive from Canberra.

My name is Dan Edwards and I am a local Canberra emerging artist working in the textiles fibre field. Currently I am collecting men’s flannelette shirts for an artwork I am envisioning. If anyone around the Canberra area has any old flannelette shirts in their cupboards (see image for example) that they’ve been meaning to take down to the op shops or even throw in the rag pile I would love to take them off your hands. My work is themed around the identity of the craftsman in Australian culture from the 1970’s through to the modern day. I would be more then happy to collect any shirts you may have.

On Monday 13th June from 10am until 4pm, Canberra Potters' Society will host a benefit pottery sale for Ian Jones and Moraig McKenna, whose beautiful Gundaroo home and gallery were recently destroyed by fire.

This coming Saturday 11 June is the Carrotmob event - which is an initiative being supported by SEE-Change .

What is CarrotMob?
In a Carrotmob campaign, businesses compete at how socially responsible they can be, and then a network of consumers spends money to support the winner. It’s the opposite of a boycott. Carrotmobs are about showing people that how and where they spend there money does make a difference – you can ask for more than just the product – you can ask that it is locally made, or produced sustainably, or ethically, or that the profits from its sale stay in the local community – especially if you shop in a mob!

Where is it happening? If you shop at any stage on the Saturday at the Ainslie IGA, your money will be put towards initiatives to improve the sustainability of the Ainslie IGA. However between 11-2pm there will be music, a bbq, home sustainability information, games and prizes to be won.
