AUSTRALIAN SEWING GUILD (CANBERRA) BUS TRIP TO CABRAMATTA

Come on a 33 seater bus (with a trailer for all the shopping) to the 10 or so fabric shops in Cabramatta, Sydney. The bus will also be making a side trip to a couple of haberdashery shops close by. Up and back in one day.

Shibori Workshops

WORKSHOPS

World Shibori Network artists, Barbara Schey and Joan James will be giving a 2 day workshop in shibori techniques on 12^th and 13^th March, 2011, at the Village Hall, Strathnairn Homestead. Both Barbara and Joan have exhibited their work in exhibitions overseas and have taught extensively throughout Australia. 

Barbara will work with DISAPPEARING SHIBORI!  on Saturday 12^th March, 9.30 – 4.00

This workshop will involve discharge or colour removal on silk and cotton in new and innovative ways using techniques Barbara learned in Japan.  Degumming of silk and meltoff of lame will also be included if time permits.  Barbara has been teaching this workshop for some time now and it is very popular.  Students need to bring pure silk in a dark colour, also pure cotton in a dark colour.   Barbara gets good results from pure cotton (black) voile available from Spotlight (makes great sarongs!).  For the silk discharge, she recommends black silk georgette.  Silk organza is needed for the degum and small amount of lame for meltoff.

On Sunday 13^th March, 9.30 – 4.00 Joan will cover SHIBORI and INDIGO dyeing on silk and cotton, and shibori techniques on synthetic fabrics.  Joan will cover the making and upkeep of the indigo vat and will introduce a ‘fruit indigo vat’, which Yoshiko used while teaching recently in Australia.  The use of the steamer for setting the fabrics will be discussed. 

Students need to bring pure silk and well washed cotton (it may be coloured, but not dark navy or black) and some sheer polyester fabric.  Fine wool may also be used.

Cost of workshop:  $250 for the two days.

Does the NCC have undercover car parking?

Yes, parking is available underneath the National Convention Centre for 260 cars, with internal lift access from the top level. There is also FREE parking across the road for over 1000 cars.

Is there disabled access?

Yes, there is disabled access inside the NCC, as well as ramps located on the Constitution Avenue and Glebe Park entrances to the building and disabled accessible lifts in the car park.

Community Art Show at Queanbeyan Public School

Friday 4th and Saturday 5th March

Queanbeyan Public School is holding its inaugeral Community Art Show in the school hall, Isabella Street, Queanbeyan. Mayor Tim Overall will open the Art Show at 6pm on Friday 4th March.

On show will be artworkd from local artists. All artwork displayed will be available for purchase.

South Coast and Country Quilters weekend workshops

Bead embellishment workshops at the South Coast and Country Quilters Guild's biennial quilting weekend in Cobargo in early March (the weekend of March 5 and 6). 

As of this month, any vacancies in workshops are now open to non-members. There were two vacancies in bead embellishment workshops, and also some vacancies in Carol Divall's felting workshops . The workshop cost for non-members is $75 per day.

Bead Embellishment for Creative Textiles and Jewellery, It runs across the two days, it is possible for participants to attend just one of the days instead of both.

The first day of this workshop consists of my one-day workshop called Bead-Embellished Brooches (check out my website for more details and some pictures of brooch samples: http://chiatanyadesigns.com.au/category/upcoming-workshops/one-day-workshops/).

The second day participants will create a peyote-stitch beaded bezel around a cabochon. Participants will also be guided in the designing of their own beaded neckpiece. Participants will most likely not get past this design stage, as these neckpieces take some time to complete.
