Canberra Glassworks 3rd Birthday Weekend

FREE ACTIVITIES TO CELEBRATE CANBERRA GLASSWORKS' 3rd BIRTHDAY

Saturday 22 May

10.00-4.00: Artists in Action in the Hotshop

Watch artists Nick Wirdnam, Holly Grace, Annette Blair and Glassworks Creative Director Clare Belfrage at work in the Hotshop. The afternoon also sees Alex Chambers teaching a Class on Demand in the Hotshop, and glass balloon-making to celebrate our 3rd birthday.

10.00 onwards: Morning tea cakes in the Glassworks café

Get the day off to a great start and celebrate the Canberra Glassworks 3rd birthday by calling in to the Glassworks Café for a tea or coffee and some cake

10.30-11.30: Camelia Cha Musical Performance with cups of tea - Foyer

Join Anne Norman (aka Camelia Cha) for a performance of tea-inspired music and readings from her book Curiosi-tea. Anne/Camelia will perform excerpts from her book as well as shakuhachi, the Japanese bamboo flute, and tell of her adventures in China and Japan in her quest for knowledge about tea.

11.30-12.30: Glass teapot making Demonstration - Flameworking Studio

Local artist Peter Minson will give a glass tea-pot making demonstration in the flame-working studio.

11.00-4.00: The great community bead-making marathon!

Join expert bead artists in the Flame-working area to make a bead as part of the Glassworks first-ever Bead-a-thon. Try your hand at bead-making and have your efforts added to the Canberra Glassworks Community String of Beads.

11.00-3.00: Kids' Crazy Creatures Glass Design Competition - Project Space

Draw your crazy creature and you could be one of four winners who will have their creatures made in glass during the July School Holidays. Free entry.

12.30 - 1.00: Free guided tour of the Glassworks.

Volunteer guide will give a tour of the glassworks and explain the different studio areas and programs. Check in at Reception by 12.25.

12.30-1.15: Kiln-forming demonstration by Lisa Cahill - Kiln area

Join Lisa Cahill for demonstration of some of the techniques she has used to create her sublime and beautiful glass work currently on exhibition in the Canberra Glassworks Gallery.

2.00pm: Warren Langley artists talk - Foyer

Artist Warren Langley will speak about his spectacular glass public art work, Touching Lightly, commissioned by the ACT Government for the Canberra Glassworks' chimney stack and launched on Friday 21 May.

2.00-4.00: Demonstrations by Luna Ryan and Amy Schlief - Kiln area

Join glass artists Luna and Amy for demonstrations of various 'cold-working' techniques in the Kiln Room.

Sunday 23 May

Local and interstate artists work together to blow as many glass tumblers as they can (and have some fun in the process) in two hours.

10.00 - 12.30: Glass casting - in the Hotshop

Simon Maberley and team work on a glass casting project.

1.00-3.00: Klaus Moje and team

Watch international glass great Klaus Moje and his team of seven assistants undertake the specialised and spectacular 'roll-up' technique where one of Klaus's large and intricately design flat, fused glass sheets is heated and rolled into a cylindrical vessel form. Klaus, the originator of this technique which is now known world-wide as the 'Aussie Roll-up' will provide commentary.

11.00-4.00 Artists demonstrations - in the Kiln Studio

11.00-12 noon: Current artist-in-residence Wendy Fairclough from South Australia

12.00 - 2pm: Local artist, Amy Schlief

2.00-4pm: Local artist Luna Ryan
