Australia's biggest Art Cloth Swap

Australia's biggest Art Cloth Swap is to be hosted by ArtWear Publications, in conjunction with the Textile Art Festival in Brisbane.

Here's how it works:  decorate a 70cm square of silk and send it with your details to the girls at Embellish magazine - including a brief description about what you have done with the cloth and a stamped, self-addressed envelope for the return of a different piece of decorated silk the same size. Your Art Cloth and description will be displayed at the Textile Art Festival, to be held June 11-13, 2011.
After the event, you will be sent a silk piece created by someone else - so that everyone who enters receives a surprise piece of Art Cloth from a total stranger. The swap is meant to be fun, challenging and a great way to gain publicity, while showcasing the diversity and creativity of Art Cloth enthusiasts.

What better way to enhance your silk collection and exhibit your skills at the same time? Email thegirls@artwearpublications.com.au for the entry form and sign-on details.
The Festival will feature specialist textile art retailers, great displays, artists at work to watch and learn from, and workshops to join.  Visit www.textileart.com.au for more details.
And this year - it runs alongside the Scrapbook Expo and one ticket gets you in to both events! Brisbane is the place to b e if you love textile art or papercraft.

Goulburn Regional Art Gallery Workshops and Exhibition

GRAG will be running four fantastic jewellery making workshops in May/June 2011. The workshops will coincide with an upcoming touring exhibition excessory: Contemporary Australian Jewellery which will be showcasing some amazing contemporary Australian jewellery - all made from recycled items.

Places on the workshops are limited so book early.

Tracy Hopkirk
Saturday 21 May: Workshop 1pm—4pm,   jewellery making  with artist Tracy Hopkirk (adults and teens)
Join local artist and jewellery designer Tracy Hopkirk in an exciting hands on jewellery making experience. The workshop will make use of recycled objects to create a unique wearable object. In this workshop you will have the opportunity to design your own piece of jewellery and  learn some amazing jewellery making techniques. Tracy will help you to create your piece and show you how to use Perspex, rubber, wire and found objects to create a ring, bracelet/bangle or a necklace.

Fiona Hammond
Saturday 28 May: Workshop 1pm—4pm,    jewellery making  with artist Fiona Hammond (adults and teens)
Put the whimsy back into jewellery-making in this enjoyable workshop with local  artist Fiona Hammond. Combine items such as aluminium cans, op-shop-source textiles, bottle caps and ‘fishy’ soy sauce bottles to make one-of-a-kind jewellery pieces that make you smile!

Techniques incorporated in the workshop include pressing patterns into pieces of aluminium cans, steam set textile manipulation, and simple hand stitching. Some general jewellery making techniques will also be covered if required.

Walter Brecely

Saturday 4 June: Workshop 1pm—4pm,   jewellery making  with artist Walter Brecely (adults and teens)
In this class you will use found objects either in their original state or cut and formed to create a personalised and unique chain necklace. Walter will help you create your necklace and teach you various techniques that will emphasise your found objects as the ‘jewels’ of your piece.

Saturday 18 June: Workshop 1pm—4pm,   jewellery making  with artist Emma Kidson (adults and teens)
The workshop begins by learning how to make a gorgeous floral brooch from recyclables that everyone has around  their home. Emma will guide you in using your new skills to create your own necklace or earrings to take home.

Colour Workshop with Merv Moriarty

Merv Moriarty is holding a four day colour workshop, this will be two consecutive weekends in May at his residence, Wallagoot Far South Coast NSW.

Colour Workshop:  14th & 15th, and following weekend 21st & 22nd of May

No drawing or painting ability is required for this workshop.  All colour exercises use a simple diagrammatic format and even when we use a subject such as a flowering plant, only bands or squares are used to record the colours.

I have carried out and continued to develop colour workshops, such as this, on countless occasions over the last thirty years or so. In these workshops I do not simply lecture on colour theory, although some lecture and demonstration time is essential to cover and explain fundamental principles of colour. These explanations and demonstrations of essential principles are spread out over the four days, but by far the greater learning experience realized in these workshops comes about as a living, hands on, discovery that you will share with all the other participants in the workshop. You will also be an active participant, because much of what you will learn about colour will come from guided research into the important things about colour that you individually, and the group collectively, will undertake.

Early Bird price $440.00 (payment made by Friday 22/4/11) or $480.00 full price.
