Beyond Floral
A very special exhibition of one of Australia's most respected contemporary jewellers. Marian Hosking engages with the natural environment and over the past four decades has depicted both birds and flora elements in her sensitive and delicate jewellery and objects. For this exhibition at Workshop Bilk Marian focused on the heath-land, mallee and arid regions around Sydney, Mildura and Alice Springs. She has developed a personal vocabulary to express a specific vision and interpretation of the qualities of Australian light and landscape. In this body of work she has examined and reinterpreted a selection of plants, as brooches, rings and necklaces. She favours silver, with its evasive highlights and shifting shadows highlighting low relief. The works draw attention to the specificity of things.
This is the first solo exhibition in the Canberra region for Marian, however her work is familiar to
the serious jewellery collector as she has exhibited widely in Australia and is included in all
significant public collections. Dr Marian Hosking is a master of Australian craft and a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Art and Design, Monash University. She is a mentor to many established and emerging artists.
This is an exhibition that is truly a feast for the eyes and senses and not to be missed. On until 6th November.
