Emerging and established artists are invited to contribute sculptural works to an exhibition which explores the theme of On the edge

Belconnen Arts Centre is located on the shore of Lake Ginninderra and with this living on the water’s edge, comes a unique opportunity to engage with the environment on a daily basis. This engagement infuses our creative responses and affects both those who work in and those who visit the space.

How does place influence us? How does space affect our responses, our actions, our dreams? How do we interject ourselves into the universe? How do we live on the edge?

Artists are asked to explore these ideas and respond with works in all mediums for an exhibition at the Arts Centre Main Gallery and Outdoor Gallery spaces in May 2011.
• A maximum of 3 works by each artist (dependant on size of works and number of pieces constituting an individual work) will be selected from submissions.
• Up to 12 artists will be selected for the show, from applications that include completion of the EOI form, a cv and 6-8 images of current work or work created within the last 12 months (a sketch or early images of the proposed work/s are also encouraged).

• The proposed work for On the edge, must be newly created work not seen in the Belconnen/Canberra region within the last 12 months.

• All works may be for sale with a commission of 25%plus gst (27.5%) taken by the Arts Centre.

• Exhibition cost per artist: $150.00 (this includes portion of gallery hire fees; design and printing of invitations (each artist to receive 25 hard copies & e-version); catering costs for opening night; exhibition signage and media releases and publicity to BAC media sources and the extensive database of over 2000 individuals and organisations.

Artists will be required to assist with installation and available to ‘sit’ the exhibition for some time during the exhibition period.

The exhibition will be coordinated by Dianne Libke, exhibiting artist and 2009 Graduate, ANU Sculpture Workshop.

Selection process:
Works will be selected from submissions by an independent committee which will include Wendy Teakel, Head, Sculpture Workshop, ANU; David Broker, Director Canberra Contemporary Artspace; and Jacqueline Schultze, Exhibitions Coordinator, Belconnen Arts Centre.

Applicants will be notified of their application outcome by 15 March by email or phone (whichever is preferred by the applicant).

Selection is entirely at the discretion of the committee, and all decisions are final.

Criteria:
Works that relate and interpret the exhibition theme in unique and unexpected ways will be favourably considered. On the edge aims to highlight the use of a variety of mediums, as well as to exhibit works by both emerging and established artists. Works to be considered for the Outdoor Gallery space need to be able to withstand changeable weather conditions, and are not to leave any permanent marks on the pavement.

Artists are encouraged to visit the Arts Centre and view both gallery spaces and discuss any technical issues before submitting their applications.

HOW TO APPLY:
• Complete the attached Expression of Interest form
• Include your current CV
• Include 6-8 images (jpgs of at least 500dpi) of current work or work created within the last 12 months
• You may include a sketch or early images of the proposed work/s for On the edge
