Balba grew up in Papua New Guinea where girls learn how to make bilums when they are as young as 8 or 9. Balba started when she was 9. She says that there are two regions in Papua New Guinea where the making of bilums is popular. They are Highlands and Momase regions. Balba says she will bring some examples from these regions. Bilums are used constantly to carry babies, to put produce in, for marketing and shopping and have many other uses.
